Miss Perpetua Ugbang
Generations are usually blessed with Prophets, icons, Avatars, Stars or minions, but this generation has been blessed with a woman that is the encapsulation of these and more.  October 14 is etched in gold in the annals of time- on that day in a serene neighborhood in Igodor-nkum Town, a small group of people gathered in Ugbang household to welcome to the world an intrepid iconoclast, an irrepressible and irresistible game changer and a passionate humanitarian; Perpetua Ugbang.

A lady with eclectically dexterous capacities, persistently in the process of redefining and redesigning herself and showing that indeed, the depth and breadth of her endowments are cavernous, unfathomable and imponderable.

Perpetua Ugbang is one of the most exciting ladies I have met recently, she is the kind of woman you would love to be with often, very knowledgeable across various fields, has rich sense of humour and is very passionate about the things she does. She has great vision and often tells me how she transforms her ideas into practice.

Perpetua Ugbang (MIHSD) is a leader with exquisite character and a humanitarian; she is well known for her humanitarian services. God’s grace and selfless service to humanity is her watch word.
Perpetua Ugbang is the Founder/Executive Director of Perpetua Ugbang Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization based in Cross River State Nigeria.

A peep into her résumé reveals she was born into the family of late Mr. and lady Joseph Ibu Ugbang in Igodor-nkum of ogoja LGA of Cross River State. She had her pre nursery education at Mater Dei-Day International School, Igoli Ogoja.

She went further for her primary education at Good Shepherd Center for Special Education, monaiya road Igoli between 1992 to 1997.  She proceeded to Government Secondary School Kukare in Obanliku between 1998 to 2004 for her secondary education. Miss Perpetua Ugbang studied at School of Orthopedic Cast Technology Enugu between 2009 to 2013 where she got her HND in Orthopedic Technology. Not satisfied, bagged a diploma in NGO Management and Administration at the Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development in the year 2016.

One of the outstanding qualities Perpetua Ugbang brings on, is her leadership capacity and penchant for service. She is rooted in humanitarian services and never spares an opportunity to offer her time and energy to the growth of humanity. She serves diligently in several leadership positions in the Nigerian Red Cross Society and Rotary International District 9110 Nigeria.

Writing explicitly about Perpetua Ugbang would take a journal, as she is a leader per excellence.
Life will have its true meaning when value for existence is exhaustively defined through a well harmonized quality of service to the course of humanity and doggedness in social development.

Perpetua is currently working tirelessly to see to the growth of her Foundation, "Perpetua Ugbang Foundation"; with “Save Initiative for the Nigerian Girl Child” as project name.

Perpetua Ugbang Foundation seeks to offer a platform where underserved people will have a bright future by helping them to build and develop skills and resources that is vital for healthy and good living, thus reducing their vulnerability. The foundation has open doors of opportunities for call-members, students and volunteers on internship to learn and also take part in its activities.

Perpetua Ugbang Foundation focused on empowering humanity through quality education and sound health, with the following mission:

1. Providing basic education to the illiterate girl child.
2. Building a platform in the state where girls in rural communities can have access to education.
3. Creating education awareness among local communities of rural areas.
4. Reducing child maternal motality ratio by providing basic health education and access to health facilities.
5. Providing resource equity to all deprieved girls in the society.

The organization, since inception, has been maintaining good relationship with partners and the project beneficiaries. It has collaborated with Rokids International Schools & Educational Research center on the enrollment of the 1000 girl child into schools in Bagga and Kundeve communities situated in Obanliku Local Government in Cross-River State of Nigeria.
Let us all rise and support "Save Initiative for the Nigerian Girl Child". Together lets increase our country's GDP by educating the Girl-Child.

No fewer than 72 graduating Radiographer were inducted by the Radiographer Registration Board Nigeria (RRBN) as the University of Calabar holds her 11th International Induction and Oath taking ceremony recently.

The event which saw 72 graduates drawn from various Universities including University of Calabar, Nsukka and Ghana inducted was held at University of Calabar International Conference Centre.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Registrar and Chief Executive of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria, (RRBN) Chidiebere T. Chidiebere advised the graduands to imbibe the basic tenets and ethics of the profession by being punctual and regular in attendance to duties and mutual respect for senior colleagues.

On his part, the Provost, College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Prof. Maurice Asuquo  proposed a Faculty of Radiography for the University of Calabar, even as he advised graduands not to focus on today’s achievement as the best but to seek to reach the peak of their noble profession by not losing grip of the vital lessons gathered from their lectures.

In his valedictory speech, the overall best graduating Radiography student, Mr. Esop Esop Jacob expressed profound gratitude to their parents for the tremendous sacrifices made while, further thanking the Lecturers and the University Management for grooming them to be better and stronger.
Highpoints of the ceremony was the presentation of the 11th Radiographer induction and Oath taking Lecture by Dr. Nneoyi Onen Egbe, on the topic “Breaking the Frontiers of 21st Century Radiography Practice” .

Team Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) shone like stars as they emerged the winners of the 2017 Enactus Nigeria National Competition held at the Civic Centre, Lagos state.
ABU Enactus was adjudged the champions at the 3-day event after beating three of its counterparts who made it to the finals- University of Lagos, Covenant University and Babcook.
The 2017 Nigeria champions is expected to represent Nigeria at the September London Enactus World Cup where National Champions from 36 different countries will meet to compete on the global stage.
Covenant university came second. This year's Enactus Nigeria National Championship saw nineteen (19) different Nigerian universities competing for the ultimate trophy.

The Transparency Advocacy Development Initiative for Nigeria, a civil society organization has lauded the Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar (UNICAL), Calabar Prof Zana Akpagu over what the group described as "judicious utilization of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TEFund".

The National Coordinator of the group,  Yomi David, made the commendation in Abuja recently while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the group's field assessment to schools.

While urging other heads of tertiary institutions to take a clue from the progress in UNICAL to fully utilise the funds, he added that utilisation of TETFund would help bring back the lost academic glory and make some new universities to be at par with other second generation universities.

He said that the university had been able to execute several projects using the TETFund allocations made to the university and her internally generated revenue.

According to him "Proofs cannot be denied as we have seen in the case of University of Calabar and we can boldly say based on public perception that confidence in this government is being shored-up.

"Any visitor to the University of Calabar will be filled with pleasant joy that such quantum of projects visible on ground have been executed.

“Some of these outstanding projects include the Faculty of Dentistry building, which was commenced and completed within two months and Faculty of Medicine newly built to cater for learning needs.

“Others are media arts studios for Mass Communication Department, 500-seat twin lecture pavilion and refurbishment of all Science laboratories and supplied with gas from a centralised system among others.

Continuing he sad that "This goes to show President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to investing massively in education as the bedrock of development.

“It further buttresses the fact that the government does not stand in isolation when the call for prudent management of resources, anti-corruption and good governance arise having appointed like minds in strategic positions".

He reiterated that the tremendous achievements could only be made possible through discipline, dedication and efficient management of resources that eschew all forms of corruption and abuse of office.

The Coordinator however called on the Federal Government to maintain and step up its intervention programmes such as the TETFund to boost infrastructure and enhance development in the education sector.

He maintained that the TETFund has contributed immensely to the projects execution and rapid educational development in the country.

David urged administrators of Nigerian tertiary institutions to sustain and ensure prudent utilisation of resources in their various institutions even as he stressed the need for management of universities across the country to look inward and explore various sources of revenue.

"Our tertiary institutions should involve programmes that would bridge the skills gap or meet specific needs of graduating", he added.

University of Calabar (UNICAL) contingents are through to the semi-finals at the ongoing Enactus national competition.

Team UNICAL defeated 3 Nigerian Universities in the first round (League Four-Ekiti State University, University of Ibadan, University of Agriculture, Makurdi and Federal Polytechnic-Offa) to be awarded entry into the semi-finals.




The competition holding at the Civic Centre in Lagos state commenced on the 4th of July.

Some folks think the easiest way to attain success in any given field of human endeavour is to cut corners and transact businesses not legit in that respect.

Businesses not legit are acts capable of ruining one’s chances of success in any situation one finds his/herself. These in the aspect of exams involves carrying extraneous materials into the exam hall at the instance that your counterparts are busy cracking their brains out to supply answers to the problems before them.

Be that the case, it is understandable that most persons who tout the notion of carrying extraneous materials considered illegit into exam hall are bereft of the fact that success have secrets and untill those secrets are unravel all efforts towards success will only seem to amount to an exercise in futility.

There are basically two broad practical steps to consider before venturing into any exams. These steps are PRE-EXAMS PREPARATION and EXAMS PREPARATION tips.

Enter Pre-Exams Preparation.
Pre-exams preparation are basically preparatory measures embarked upon before the D-day of the exams. The Pre-exams preparatory tips include:

• Trying your hands on past/model questions of the exams. This step will help you to build the desired confidence that you will do well in the exams.

• Read your textbooks and pinpoint major facts out from them for exams that will come in objective and subjective formats.

• Create mnemonics to support your memory for topics you think are so vast.

• Endeavour a day before the D-day of the exams, all gadgets you will require in the exams hall are kept intact possibly at a place you can easily sight them out.

Cohabitation- Campus Marriage
One of the most prevalent practices amongst students on campus is cohabitation. Statistics has shown that 48% of undergraduates actually engage in this depraved vice. Even more appalling is how this vice is greatly applauded by their fellow students.

 The term 'cohabitation' refers to a state in which a male and female live together and having a sexual relationship without being married.

The sole reason for being in school is to learn, however, due to whatever circumstances has brought up, learning has undergone a new transformation. It is no news that majority of undergraduates are in one relationship or the other, this does not however give the liberty to be living as a couple without having gone through the rites of marriage.

Funny enough, many of these students perpetrating this act do not see anything even remotely wrong with their decadent lifestyle. One cannot help but wonder the wheels turning in these students head for them to engage in this depravity.

  A very common reason for engaging in such act is the word 'love'. Their love for their partners as well as their hesitation to be apart from each other has driven them to the sole conclusion that they should live together as couples.

  Students, most especially the females are easily led into believing that living together with their partners will make them get to know each other better. This includes behaviours, likes and dislikes amongst others which will supposedly enhance and strengthen their relationship. For the males, cohabitation gives them this feeling of being an 'alpha' male - a domineering figure in their partners life and the ability of having a say in their lives. Of course, it also gives them the chance to ensure that their partners do not cheat on them.

  Also, cohabitation seems to gives such couples this rush of pride amongst their fellow students, they become the envy of other student couples. Some even go as far as getting an award for ' best couples on campus'!

  Another reason for students practicing cohabitation is lack of accommodation. Most students live together with their partners with the excuse of having no where to stay ultimately resulting in them not leaving at all.

  The bitter truth is that cohabitation poses a huge threat to those practicing it.
First, it distracts students from their studies - the initial reason for them being in school. Ladies involved in such practices tend to do some domestic chores apart from sex which includes washing, cleaning and cooking for their partners which leaves little or no time for their studies. The males take up the responsibility of being the 'head' of the house and have to provide in terms of finances and otherwise for their partners, some even take menial jobs so as to make ends meet and consequently deviating from their studies.

  Another danger of cohabitation is that it causes emotional trauma. Most times, the females in the relationship are assaulted physically and psychologically. They tend to wholly depend on their partners to provide for them and this reduces them to being a liability rather than an asset.

Unfortunately, many of these relationships hardly last, some die when one or both partners graduate from school.

  Even more alarming is the high rate of unwanted pregnancies, abortions and sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, herpes and HIV/AIDS which might lead to untimely deaths!

  All these for what? This brings us to the twenty million dollar question- What is the solution?
  Charity they say begins at home, Parents have a lot of work cut out for them. The first of many is giving proper orientation to their  children especially their females. The latter should be taught the value of independence and not be a subject to the whims of men. For example, they do domestic chores for their partners when they are married.

  Another of the Parent's numerous duties is thorough monitoring of their children. This does not necessarily means giving them no room for privacy, however, it does not hurt to keep close tabs on them and place them under watchful radar. If possible, they should pay unexpected visits to their children in their schools. This goes a long way in curbing the practices of cohabitation.


  The school itself should not be exempted in the process of eradicating cohabitation. Accommodations should be duly provided for the students. Also, the school authorities should organise various seminars and other educational talks in a bid to educate the students on the hazards of cohabitation and how to totally avoid it.
