Academic Discrepancies: ABU versus Affiliated campuses
Orafa Abraham, Fuek

The students of federal college of education Kano, are expressing dissatisfaction towards the inequality in the grading system in affiliated campuses as academic rivalry existing between the prestigious university (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria), and its affiliated campuses.

The students expressed disdain and shock over the way they have always been graded with the “so called invalidated moderation”.

What students are saying is that, here in federal college of education Kano, we are not being lectured but being taught. We have well qualified lectures here who are committed to doing their job. However, if the university sees that there is a dichotomy between them in terms of lecturers they should call it off by withdrawing programmes being offered here, source says”.

The students lamented that they see no need why students result grades will be drastically slashed down in the name of the so called moderation. If articulate moderation is to be carried out, students’ script should be properly checked but the case is not obtainable here. Students’ grade is being cut down simply because they are from satellite campuses. I have been to ABU severally and also have friends there. In the course of our discussion I discovered that they are not better than those of us in the satellite campuses.

Students are also seriously fed up with the sending of unfavourable time table to affiliated campuses, late returns of the moderated results, and delay in sending our colleagues for NYSC and lots more. Right now there are two set of students who graduated and are yet to be mobilised for service.

Over the years and from reliable source the ABU senate has complained in their sittings about the better performance and results returned from the affiliated campuses than those in the main school. There are instances in the past where students who had deferred semesters, carry-overs and spill-overs had been sent to main campus and had best results than the mother students.

Students from FCE Kano, therefore call on the VC, ACADEMIC SECRETARY AND THE SENATE TO AS A MATTER OF URGENCY RESOLVE THIS ACADEMIC ‘Discrepancies
